FOUR ON THE FLOOR-JOE O’ROURKE OF LIKE MY PEDALS

The Guitar Knobsblog

What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment. Joe makes people pedals one at a time totally customized, but for his own sounds, he relies on a few industry workhorses. If you are not familiar with Like My Pedals do yourself a favor and check them out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. Check out these choices for his Four On The Floor.

1. MZO Effects – The Blue Preamp

“I love this pedal for a first stage. I run it all the time because I run super clean amps to start with. So I need something that’s going to give me a little bit of breakup without turning my volume all the way up. It’s got independent controls for your gain, your levels, your timber to the effect. It’s got different settings on it as well where you can kind of click in and different lift modes. I’m not really sure what all the knobs on it do, but I know it makes my amp sound good. It was love at first plugin on that pedal. I fell in love with that circuit. I don’t know what it is but I’ve been telling everybody I can about it. You need one of these, this pedal will just change your life in that low gain arena. If you can get one, go ahead and get it, this is my endorsement.

2. Gold circuit Klon clone example- J. Rockett – Archer Ikon Overdrive

“I don’t have necessarily a particular one,(let’s use the J. Rockett Archer Ikon for this example, but you could also use the Wampler Tumnus, the Mythos Mjolnir or several others) but it’s going to be based around the Klon gold circuit. The gold version has the TLO72 chips in it, whereas the silver would have JRC4550. That’s really the only difference between the two versions. It’s got just a nice mid hump, nice breakup. You can roll it clean tone back in or you can roll the gain a little hotter, which I typically tend to do. If you can have a couple of modifications to it, like different clipping options or like a bass boosted fat mode, that would also be fantastic. But I love playing in that Klon style circuitry. Another good modification you could do on them to make them sound even better is swap out the op-amps and make it kinda like a half gold half silver version and you’ll get more of like a tube screamer feel out of it as well, which I know kind of defeats the purpose for most people, but I love that.”

3. Eventide – TimeFactor Delay

“This is the delay pedal I’ve used pretty much ever since I started using delay. I had one delay pedal before this, but once I got this one, I never went back. I know it’s not the popular kid at school. It’s not cool Strymon Timeline, but I liked the functionality of the TimeFactor and it has a hundred available presets— I use two of them. Basically, I use the tap tempo, then save that tempo onto like the next six or seven presets. So that way I could just quickly bring up the tempo I need. My first channel is always a dotted eighth and my channel two is always a quarter note. I don’t know, it’s kind of stupid. I probably could do it a lot easier, but I like presets.”

4. Mr. Black – Supermoon Reverb

I have had at least one of these pedals ever since I got my first. They used to do every black Friday, they would have a $99 sale for any pedal that they made. I would always buy one every year. Currently, I have the Blood Moon version that’s blue, but I’ve had the supermoon, I’ve had the supermoon Chrome, I’ve had the other blood moon that’s red, I’ve had the eclipse… it just, it doesn’t matter which one of them it is—that circuit for reverb is so lush. I never even use the modulation feature on it either. I just basically use the mix and the decay, but it just gives me a tone I absolutely love.
