FOUR ON THE FLOOR-JEFF SCHROEDER OF SMASHING PUMPKINS AND NIGHT DREAMER

The Guitar Knobsblog

What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment. This is Jeff’s third time sharing his selections and in this case, they are his FANTASY Four On The Floor. If you are not familiar with his guitar playing in Smashing Pumpkins or Night Dreamer do yourself a favor and check them out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. Check out these choices for his Four On The Floor.

1. JHS – The Bender Fuzz

“So JHS just came with their legends of fuzz line, which I think there’s a 1992 Mike Matthews Red Army Overdrive, a Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face, a Sola Sound MKIII Tonebender, and a Unixvox Super-Fuzz. In particular, I would want to check out the Tone Bender which is called The Bender. I think what’s really cool is that they’ve spent a lot of time hunting down kind of the ultimate version of those pedals and then trying to make these creations that are kind of replicating a certain era of those pedals. So ut of the box they are really affordable giving people access to these great pedals, which is rad because any of those pedals would be now in the current market, ridiculously overpriced for a fuzz pedal, especially The Fuzz Faces, Tone Benders and Super Fuzzes.

2. Cooper Effects – Arcades Delay/Reverb

“It is a cool little thing that you can put in basically a cartridge with it has a different type of effect algorithm type of thing. So this pedal could be many different things. I think he’s got quite a few cartridges lined up already. And so that’s definitely something I want. I like a great idea, you know, innovative design and fun and smart. You know, for anybody that remembers Atari or the earlier Nintendo stuff, you know, you had a stack of cartridges and you had to plug them in which seems pretty fun.”

3. Maestro – Echoplex EP-3

“This is the solid-state one. It sounds amazing. Like, it does this amazing thing to your sound and is just really, really cool. I could see why guys have used them in the past, just even if they’re not using the delay just to run through because the Echoplex does something kind of magical. Most smaller pedal forms that try to do what the Echoplex does don’t even come close. But…from what I hear the Catalinbread, the big Belle Epoch Deluxe Echo Unit is pretty spot on. I really would like to have one of those old school Echoplexes. They just sound so great, like super 3D and just the feel of it and the energy coming off of it, the delays it’s, it’s really magical.”

4. Eventide H3000 – Ultra Harmonizer

These things sound really, really beautiful. There’s just some absolutely amazing gorgeous sounds in there. They’re not terribly expensive anymore or like used, you know, but it’s still pricey. It’s still like $1,200 to $1,500 bucks for a working H3000. Apparently like even their plugin versions that they are making at Eventide that they said don’t have all the algorithms that the actual hardware units had. It’s really an experience to play through one.
