FOUR ON THE FLOOR-JORDAN CLAYTON OF PINE-BOX CUSTOMS

The Guitar Knobsblog

What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment. Jordan Clayton burst onto the pedal scene recently with a line-up of fantastic sounding drives. His penchant for drives is evident in his picks here as well. If you are not familiar with Pine-Box Customs do yourself a favor and check them out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. Check out these choices for his Four On The Floor.

1. Boss – BD-2 Blues Driver Overdrive

“It’s just been a go-to for 13 years or so. It was the very first pedal I ever bought. It’s the very first pedal I ever really noticed and thought, wow, this just sounds great. I saw it in a small venue in Memphis in 2006 and saw Manchester orchestra for the first time. I had no idea who they were, but Andy Holt place similar to the way I play where he pretty much dime’s his amps and just uses his pedals basically to push them a little bit. The BD-2’s lower gain settings on it are just phenomenal and really push your amp to that next level without doing a whole lot from the pedal. I’ve had four or five of them over the years and they’re just great.

2. Demedash Effects – 112+ Drive Channel

“This is the most outstanding lower gain overdrive I’ve probably played. I treat it more like an EQ or a boost at the front of the chain. It just has a ridiculous amount of range to it. It’s got your basic three-band EQ but they all have a ridiculous amount of range. I mean, you can make it sound terrible–honestly or phenomenal. But the volume and the drive settings on it are also controlled via trimmers internally. It has a pre-gain structure as well as a post-gain structure that you can crank on the inside. You can actually make it kind of a little bit fuzzy. It’s just really weird and it has this originality to the tone that I haven’t heard anything like it before. I can’t recommend it enough. I have two currently and they’re vastly different. He changes things quite often, but they’re both great.”

3. Walrus Audio – Monument Tremolo

“Mine is the first version, I haven’t played the second version. I imagine it’s the same, just slightly smaller. I was never a huge tremolo person, but I got one on the trade. Now I almost treat it as an always-on pedal. I typically I run three amps, so I do a wet-dry-wet and I just have it going into my dry with the depth set very low it just kinda gives it just a little bit of movement, whereas typically it’s very dry. It’s great and it’s changed the way I play.”

4. Southampton Pedals – Indie Dream Overdrive/Delay/Reverb

I went on a bit of a journey for a, for flangy type chorusy effects, and I really didn’t like them for the longest time but wanted to because it’s just one of those effects that you’ve got to have. I had not wanted to like it so much and it just never did until I got hold of an Ibanez Prime Dual Chorus. So it’s a PC 10, one of the older effect. So it says a Dual Chorus when really it’s two pedals in one. The first pedal is a two knob chorus and the second pedal is a four knob flanger, still labeled chorus. Whenever I A/B test this against any over chorus or flanger it just sounds 3D compared to it, just so much better. And I couldn’t live without this one now. It’s just a fabulous pedal.
