FOUR ON THE FLOOR WITH JEFF SCHROEDER OF THE SMASHING PUMPKINS

The Guitar Knobsblog

Four On The Floor is our new podcast segment in which we ask our guests to name their four must have pedals excluding tuners. Pretty fun right! If they are a pedal builder they cannot name their own pedals of course.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder last week. Aside from being in a remarkable band, Jeff is a spectacular guitarist, who makes creating epic sounds look way to easy. He was the first guest to kick off our new segment. The Smashing Pumpkins are known for super big lush sounds with distinct tones and a solid dose of dynamics. To our surprise, Jeff shared that they really don’t use a large amount of effects. To the contrary they keep it relatively simple and let the amps and their fingers shape what we hear. These are Jeff Schroeder’s Four On The Floor (in no particular order).

1. Line 6 – M13

(or M9)–Modified by Jack Vaughan at JHV3

“…he [Jack Vaughn] does something to the audio path that take it to this other level of really clean beautiful sound. It really enhances the reverbs and delays in particular. It makes it a really great buffer if you are doing a longer cable. It’s really remarkable. That pedal which is really kind of Swiss Army knife, I use it all the time.” Check out the Line 6 M13 Stomp Box Modeler

2. Catalin bread – Bell Epoch Delay

“I have that thing on all the time because the emulation of the preamp is really good and the delay sounds great. I Just love the people at Catalinbread.” Check out the Catalinbread Bell Epoch

3. Eventide – H9

“This has become a mainstay. I started buying the individual pedals they made and then graduated to the H9, I have three of them now. You can download the algorithms you want from their website and you can edit them all on your iPhone. I just love the eventide sound, it’s definitely a “thing”. The reverbs and delays are just beautiful.” Check out the Eventide H9 Core Multi-Effects

4. Tone Freak – Naked Overdrive & Pineapple Boost

“It’s a tie because I have the Naked overdrive when I use my Marshall rig or…[the] Pineapple Boost when I play through Fenders. The Naked is a semi distorted boost, and… It’s really meant to sound great in front of a cranked Marshall. The Pineapple is really more in the “Klon”…type of drive.” Check out the Naked Boost & Pineapple Drive

Huge thanks to Jeff Schroeder for being a guest on our podcast. We wish him continued success!
